Guzan explains why he's happy to be under pressure

Trinity Road Stand - Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan is happy to embrace his international rivalry with Tim Howard.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan has told the Daily Mail that he always wants someone putting pressure on him with regards to his starting position.

The American was talking in relation to his rivalry with Tim Howard for the number one spot in the USA side, with both goalkeepers having the platform of the Premier League to use, to advance their international ambitions.

Guzan feels the pair of them have been able to develop a thick skin because of the more critical nature of football in Europe when compared with the USA.

“Tim and I get on really well, in terms of on the field and off the field,” he’s quoted by the Daily Mail.

“You always have someone pushing you or you're pushing someone else. And being in Europe, where it's obviously a little bit more cut-throat than here in the U.S., you develop a thick skin.”

Keeping players on their toes

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is someone who certainly doesn’t like his players becoming complacent with regards to their position in his team.

He’ll be looking for any way to challenge them through the international break and beyond, so he’ll likely be delighted about the American rivalry between the two experienced shot stoppers.

Competition at any level is extremely healthy because it raises the intensity in training as one player tries to keep his nose ahead of the other.

If Guzan heads back to Aston Villa for the club’s next Premier League game a little sharper as a result, Sherwood will be delighted to benefit.
