Aston Villa's Twitter-based fans ponder Joe Bennett's future after Bournemouth loan

The 25-year-old left-back has joined the Premier League new boys until January after penning a one-year contract extension.

Joe Bennett has struggled to get his Aston Villa career going since arriving from Middlesbrough in August 2012 but it seems that manager Tim Sherwood still thinks he can have a future at the club.

The 25-year-old left-back signed a one-year contract extension on deadline day to keep him at Villa Park until the summer of 2017, before joining Premier League newcomers Bournemouth on loan for the first half of the season.

Stuck behind summer signing Jordan Amavi and Kieran Richardson in the pecking order, the former England Under-21 international was facing the prospect of little first-team football over the coming months, but his south coast switch will now give him the chance to earn some top-flight minutes under Eddie Howe’s guidance.

Speaking to Bournemouth’s official website, Bennett said: “I’m really excited about the prospect of playing for AFC Bournemouth and hopefully helping them perform well this season in the Premier League.

“They’ve already made a positive start to the new season and, like everyone else, I’ve been really impressed with the fantastic job Eddie Howe has performed. They have a really good side.”

Signed for £2.75 million, Bennett was a regular starter during his first season at Villa but he has since struggled to get back into the first-team picture after falling out of Paul Lambert’s plans ahead of the 2013-14 campaign.

After spending last season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion, the ex-Boro man returned to the Midlands this summer with the aim of impressing new manager Sherwood, but he has so far featured just once in the recent 5-3 Capital One Cup victory over Notts County – coming on to score the home side’s final goal in extra-time.

Time will tell whether that will be his last meaningful contribution in a Villa shirt but, for now, here is how a portion of the claret and blue faithful reacted to the combined news of his new deal and Bournemouth loan.
