Tottenham have reportedly shown an interest in signing Newcastle star Cheick Tiote.
It is claimed that Tottenham are pursuing other targets after missing out on Axel Witsel, and Tiote, 29, has been earmarked by Mauricio Pochettino as a potential signing.
However, the report states that Spurs are reluctant to complete deals for short-term targets if their main targets are unavailable, and at 29-years-old, Tiote would certainly only be coming in as a back-up option having missed out on other players.
Tiote’s stock at St James’ Park has fallen in recent months, and due to the form of Vurnon Anita and Jack Colback this term, the Ivorian international has managed just 34 minutes of Premier League action.
First-team football does not look to be likely this term in Steve McClaren’s set-up, and Spurs could offer him a consistent role in Pochettino’s squad due to the lack of depth in the central and defensive midfield positions.
A deal for Tiote is looking unlikely right now, but if Spurs fail to bring in another midfielder in a few hours, they could make a formal approach for the Newcastle star after making initial enquiries into his availability.
