Report suggests Tottenham tried to sell Townsend despite Pochettino insisting he'll stay

Southampton were offered the chance to take the 24-year-old off Tottenham Hotspur's hands.

According to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham offered Southampton Andros Townsend or Erik Lamela plus £20 million for midfielder Victor Wanyama.

The north London side's interest in the Southampton man has been well documented, as has been their desire to offload the increasingly frustrating Lamela.

The Standard report that the Saints rejected Tottenham's offer, however, which comes as no surprise considering the indifferent form of the duo offered to them.

What is telling, though, is the fact Townsend was suggested - if the report is true.

Indeed, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino recently declared that the 24-year-old is part of his plans and won't be going anywhere.

But, considering Townsend's evident lack of quality - at least while wearing a Tottenham shirt - that always seemed like an over-confident statement to make. Especially since the recruitment of Clinton Njie and Heung-Min Son.

And the fact Spurs offered the wide man to Southampton suggests it could be another frustrating few months for Townsend at White Hart Lane. Can the 24-year-old break back into the Tottenham side or will he simply end up being let go in January or next summer?
