Newcastle are looking to bring in Vestergaard before the close of the transfer window.
It is stated that a £9 million approach was made by the Magpies, but Bremen - who have already lost Sebastien Prodl to Watford this summer - rejected the offer to ensure they kept ahold of a key defender.
Vestergaard, 23, only moved to Bremen in the January transfer window, but has established himself as an impressive centre-back in the Bundesliga, and has become a consistent international selection for Denmark.
The Magpies are facing competition for Vestergaard’s signature from the Premier League, with TMW claiming that Tottenham were looking to move for him last week, as they plan to bring in another defender before the close of the window.
Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has already overseen a large rebuilding process this summer, but a new defender is high on his list of priorities. Should an injury hit either Chancel Mbemba or Fabricio Coloccini, then the Magpies are left with just one centre-back in Steven Taylor, and a new signing could be completed before the close of the window.
It is not stated as to whether Newcastle will make another approach for Vestergaard before the pass of the deadline this evening.
