Report: Aston Villa to hold talks with Dimitar Berbatov following close of transfer window, tracking other targets first

Aston Villa may move to sign Berbatov, but only after the close of the transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa will hold talks with Dimitar Berbatov concerning a move to Villa Park, but they are not pressing to complete a deal today.

As Berbatov is a free agent following his summer departure from Monaco, there is no need for him to sign with a club before the close of the transfer window this evening. He is free to sign with a club past the deadline, and Villa are seeing the 34-year-old as a back-up target.

It is stated in the report that Villa are prioritising moves for other targets over Berbatov, and are looking to complete some deals before the window closes.

There are no names mentioned as to who Tim Sherwood is targeting, but they must be players currently signed with clubs if the head coach is looking to complete a deal today.

It is not believed that Berbatov will be added to the Villa squad today, but if no striker is signed by the Midlands club, then Sherwood is likely to pursue talks with the Bulgarian international later this week.
