David de Gea was putting on a brave face as he arrived for international duty with Spain.
The goalkeeper was pictured as he walked to the team hotel, to meet up with teammates and staff.
De Gea had expected to be celebrating clinching a transfer to Real Madrid.
Yet as reported by The BBC, the deadline for the deal was missed, and Real Madrid failed to register the paperwork in time with the Spanish authorities.
They have yet to indicate they are to appeal the botched transfer, laying the blame with the Red Devils.
Manchester United issued a lengthy response on their official website, denying they were responsible, pushing the responsibility of failure in Madrid's direction.
De Gea meanwhile must deal with the disappointment, and the international break will be an opportunity to reflect.
He will be reunited with Juan Mata, who has been recalled to the Spanish side, and could play a crucial role in getting De Gea's head right to play for United again, at least until January.
