Micky Quinn suggests Lovren was lucky to start Liverpool's season

Former top flight striker Micky Quinn expects Dejan Lovren to be dropped from the Liverpool defence.

Former Magpies striker and Liverpool fan Micky Quinn told talkSPORT that he expects Dejan Lovren to be dropped by Brendan Rodgers as soon as Mamadou Sakho nears full fitness.

Quinn claims that the Croatian centre back was lucky to start the Premier League season in the defence of the Anfield club, after he struggled to make an impact following a move from Southampton.

Lovren has been handed a chance by Brendan Rodgers, as he looks to get his career with the club moving in the right direction, but Quinn is of the group still to be convinced.

“I thought he was lucky to start this season after last season’s poor showing – Lovren is just a bog standard defender for me, who lunges in and takes gambles and you really shouldn’t gamble that much as a defender – If Sakho is fit, I think he’ll be dropped,” he told talkSPORT.

One game at a time

The best approach for Lovren is arguably just to take things one game at a time and to try and react if he makes a mistake or has a bad performance.

Rodgers urged Liverpool to invest a lot of cash into him when they signed him from the Saints and it would be a shame for that financial commitment to be cast to one side in disappointment.

Rodgers saw something in Lovren, which convinced him that he was making the right decision in going after him.

Hopefully, given a little bit of faith and backing, Lovren can respond and put together a string of more impressive and decisive defensive displays.
