Ian Wright makes a joke about Karim Benzema

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Ian Wright has joked on BT Sport that Alexis Sanchez is the marquee signing for Arsenal until Karim Benzema arrives from Real Madrid.

The Arsenal legend made the joke on BT Sport 1 in the build-up to the Premier League game between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

When former Manchester United striker Andy Cole said that Sanchez is Arsenal’s marquee player, Wright quipped: “He is the marquee player for now, until we get Benzema. When we get Benzema, (he will be the marquee player).”

The former Arsenal striker immediately burst out laughing, a clear indication that he was just joking about the Gunners getting Benzema as he does not believe that the transfer will happen.

In fact, earlier this month, Wright said on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport: “Why would Real Madrid even get rid of him?” (click here to read more).

Last week, Benzema, a France international striker, himself stated on Twitter that he is happy at Madrid, and that he has no intention of leaving the Spanish giants anytime soon (click here to read more).

According to a report in The Daily Star earlier this month, both Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in recruiting Benzema, who has been on the books of Madrid since 2009.
