Tim Howard kept his second clean sheet of the season against Tottenham.
Howard has come in for some criticism for his performances recently, while some will point to his role in the two goals conceded in the recent defeat to Manchester City, though Howard did play a big role in ensuring Everton left White Hart Lane with a point after a 0-0 draw with Tottenham.
Jagielka is quoted in the Echo, saying: “When a keeper makes a mistake or an error in judgement unfortunately it often leads to a goal.
“Tim has made only a handful of errors in his past five or six years and though he may have had a couple on the spin last season, where the fans got on his back a little bit, the character of the person comes through.
“Tim just dusts himself down and gets on with it.
It's certainly a big call from Jagielka, but also a big show of faith from the Everton skipper in their goalkeeper - especially in a league that is full of talented goalkeepers.
More performances like the one he demonstrated on Saturday evening are going to be essential for the Toffees moving forward if they are to have a successful season. At times during the last campaign, their defensive unit looked pretty fragile.
Howard needs to show more consistently high quality performances to be worthy of the tag given to him by his teammate, and in order to help Everton have a reasonably successful campaign. Two clean sheets away from home seems to be pretty good start and a clue as to how Everton will approach away games, but when they are a little more open at home, they need to find away to be strong at the back.
