Everton claimed to have made shock £18m bid for Tottenham Hotspur ace Erik Lamela

Reports in France claim Everton made an approach to sign Tottenham winger Erik Lamela.

One of the more surprising stories of transfer deadline day so far stems from France, with claims Everton made an approach to sign Erik Lamela from Tottenham Hotspur last night.

Le10Sport report the Toffees made an offer of £18 million for the Argentine, which came as Spurs were in negotiations to move the Argentine on to Marseille.

This fell through, with French newspaper L'Equipe reporting Tottenham pulled out of a deal because they had been unsuccessful in their own efforts to bring in Saido Berahino.

Everton's interest in Lamela seems bizarre, considering the way the two clubs have been unable to strike an agreement so far for Aaron Lennon.

The winger has failed to succeed at Spurs two season into his career at the club, and has it all to prove.

It hard to see Tottenham selling to a Premier League competitor, while if Everton really had that kind of money to spend on Lamela - fans would look to see it reinvested elsewhere before the transfer window closes.

The reports could be something concocted by the French media to help deflect from Marseille's failure to get the deal done, but if Everton are serious then there could be more to come before the 6pm deadline passes.
