Nir Bitton has bid farewell and good luck to former Celtic defender Virgil Van Dijk, following his move to Premier League side Southampton.
Celtic defensive midfielder Nir Bitton has issued an emotional goodbye to Celtic defender Virgil Van Dijk, with the Israeli midfielder taking to Instagram to wish the Dutchman good luck.
Van Dijk has moved to Premier League club Southampton for £11.5 million following a summer in which the former Groningen star was linked with a host of Premier League sides.
Bitton joined Celtic around the same time as the Dutchman, with the pair striking up something of a friendship in the months and years that followed.
But with the Hoops failing to get past the qualifying stage of the Champions League this term, Van Dijk's exit was always likely.
Keen to force his way into Holland's plans for the remainder of the Euro 2016 qualifiers, a move away from Parkhead was always likely for Van Dijk
And speaking on Instagram, Bitton only had kind words of support to offer the stopper.
“I'm sure this is just your first step to the top,” the Israel international wrote.
Van Dijk will get his first opportunity to impress for the Saints on September 12th with the south coast club in action against West Brom at the Hawthorns.
