Manchester United signing Radamel Falcao can add gloss to a mixed transfer window

Manchester United have been linked with a surprise move for Radamel Falcao.

Manchester United have been linked with a shock move for Radamel Falcao.

French radio station RMC report the Red Devils have made contact over the striker, who is said to be near a transfer to rivals Manchester City.

They report United have held initial talks with Falcao's agent Jorge Mendes, confirming: "Manchester United are also courting the player. MU leaders spoke with Jorge Mendes in recent hours."

A move for the striker would be led by the fact the Red Devils are close to sending Javier Hernandez on loan for the season.

Falcao is regarded as one of the world's best strikers, and is reportedly available from Monaco.

United have struggled for goals this season, scoring only two goals in four matches against Swansea City, Sunderland, MK Dons and Burnley.

While many of the problems at the club are attributed to the club's midfield, the poor performance of the strikers have also been overlooked. Wayne Rooney is out of form, Robin van Persie short of match sharpness, and Danny Welbeck continues to be linked with being sold.

Falcao would change the dynamics of United's attack, and while the money would be better spent on a midfielder, he would still surely have a huge impact at Old Trafford.

There will naturally be complaints the money is not being invested in defence or midfield, just like when Robin van Persie signed in 2012. With United needing goals to fire them into the top four, Falcao would provide that and could perform with huge effectiveness alongside the creative force of Angel di Maria.

It remains more likely he ends up at Manchester City, but if United were to try to pull off such a huge deal, the striker would add gloss to a mixed transfer window at Old Trafford, and add further intrigue to an increasingly unbalanced but hugely talented side.
