Thomas Vermaelen Pre FA Cup Press Conference

The former Arsenal defender was the man of the moment in a 1-0 win over Malaga at Camp Nou yesterday.

Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen scored his first La Liga goal for Barcelona yesterday, netting the winner as the European champions defeated Malaga 1-0 at Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana needed the Belgian centre-half to move forward and strike to ensure that Luis Enrique’s men made it two wins from their first two games.

The ex-Gunner had an injury plagued first season at the Catalan giants, playing only 63 minutes of La Liga action last term.

However, Vermaelen has been selected to start both of the club’s first two games of this season and has looked like he is getting back to his best.

As can be seen above, the Belgian struck in the 73rd minute to get his first goal for the Catalan side and ensure three points.

The defender has hailed in the Spanish press in the aftermath of the game, with Sport giving him a man of the match eight of ten rating for the performance.

Vermaelen’s availability has been as good as a new signing for Barcelona this term, with the Blaugrana yet to concede a goal in 2015-16.
