Southampton are set to sign Celtic star Virgil van Dijk for an £11.5 million fee, the Mirror claim.
The British editorial report that the Dutch defender has agreed a four-year deal with Southampton and will join his fellow compatriot Ronald Koeman on the South Coast for an eight-figure fee.
Van Dijk has been one of the most sought-after players this summer following another terrific campaign in Glasgow which ended with a Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup double triumph.
However, with the Toffees star looking fairly certain of remaining at Goodison Park this summer, the Saints have been given a clear run at signing the former Groningen defender.
Should he arrive on the South Coast, van Dijk will become the Saints’ sixth permanent addition and a warmly received figure considering the club’s apparent shortage of centre-backs.
Deal not done yet:
In spite of the latest reports, though, Southampton supporters would be wise not to get too excited until the ink has dried on the contract and the 24-year-old paraded around St. Mary’s.
A number of contrasting reports have cropped up regarding Van Dijk over the past two months, with Celtic boss Ronny Deila admitting to Sky Sports only on Saturday that he hopes to keep his star player - but that more than one club had shown an interest.
Yet, following the Hoops’ loan signing of fellow defender Tyler Blackett from Manchester United, surely a move south of the border will happen for Van Dijk before the transfer window closes.
