The Ballon d’Or favourites have been bombarding the opposition so far this term in La Liga but are yet to hit the back of the net.
There are not many people that would argue that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two best players in the world game, with the pair continuing to outdo one another with their amazing feats of individualism.
The pair netted an astonishing 91 goals between them in La Liga last season and are the undoubted frontrunners in the race to win the 2015 Ballon d’Or.
However, after two games apiece for Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, these personal rivals are yet to register a goal in 2015-16.
16 - Cristiano Ronaldo has had more shots without scoring than any other La Liga player this season (Lionel Messi 11). Strange.— OptaJose (@OptaJose) August 29, 2015
As can be seen above, Ronaldo has had 16 shots at goal over the space of Madrid’s games against Sporting Gijon and Real Betis but is yet to see one of his efforts nestle in the back of the opposition net.
Messi meanwhile has played a part in consecutive wins over Athletic Bilbao and Malaga but has not scored in 11 attempts at goal for the reigning Spanish and European champions.
It is highly unlikely that this standout statistic will run for much longer, with the pair sure to break their 2015-16 deadlocks soon, but it is uncharacteristic of Messi and Ronaldo to even go a couple of games without a goal.
