Italian outfit Genoa are pondering a surprise move for free agent Jonas Gutierrez following his release from Newcastle United this summer, Gianluca di Marzio reports.
The Italian transfer expert reports that the Serie A outfit are keen on making more additions before the upcoming transfer deadline and are considering Gutierrez for his versatility.
The Argentina international was very much a fans' favourite at St James’ Park, joining Newcastle in 2008 and becoming a mainstay in their first-team for five successive campaigns.
However, his life took an unexpected twist when in 2013 when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, ruling him out of action for a prolonged period of time.
Following a successful recovery, the 32-year-old finally returned in Newcastle colours earlier this year and helped the club stay up on the final day of the season, contributing with a goal and assist.
Yet, despite his efforts, the club opted to release him in the summer to much controversy, with Gutierrez finding out via a phone call from then caretaker boss John Carver to ex-teammate Ryan Taylor.
The former Mallorca ace has yet to land a new club this summer, but reports from Gianluca di Marzio suggest that he could be in line for a surprise deal with Genoa.
The established Italian outfit finished sixth in Serie A last season, ending the season just four points shy of Napoli in the Europa League qualification spots and seven points clear of giants AC Milan.
It is exciting times at the Marassi and should Gutierrez be offered the chance to join them, it will be a superb opportunity for the player and richly deserved considering the circumstances.
