The 32-year-old Englishman, who recently joined Championship side Burnley on a free transfer, played with Carroll at Newcastle.
Barton believes that the former Liverpool man can be as effective as Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero if he is played to his strengths.
“If you have him in your team, if you play to his strengths, he is as effective as anybody,” said former Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton on the Drivetime show on talkSPORT on Friday evening.
“He is not Aguero, obviously as everyone knows that, but he can be as effective as Aguero in the right team.
“He can lead the line, he can score goals, he can make the opposition change their style of play.”
West Ham manager Slaven Bilic should take note of Barton’s comments and should heed his advice.
Carroll is not technically one of the best strikers in the Premier League, but his aerial strength and ability to make himself a nuisance in the opposition’s penalty box need to be exploited by Bilic.
The 26-year-old is close to recovering full fitness, having already resumed first-team training with the Hammers.
The former Newcastle and Liverpool striker has been out since February following knee surgery after suffering medial ligament damage.
