Everton have signed Leandro Rodriguez from River Plate Montevideo.

As announced by the club’s official website, Everton have confirmed the signing of Leandro Rodriguez on a four-year deal from Uruguayan outfit River Plate Montevideo.

The Mirror report that the 22-year-old has joined the Toffees for a fee in the region of £500,000 and boss Roberto Martinez says he will go straight into the first-team squad.

“He’s a young talent - one of those elite, talented youngsters who we like to bring in,” Martinez explained.

“He probably won’t [need time with the Under-21s] because he has played enough games with his first team in Uruguay in a really competitive league.”

Rodriguez arrives with a pretty good pedigree, having scored 19 goals in 71 appearances for River Plate Montevideo since making his debut as a teenager.

He becomes the Toffees’ fifth permanent summer signing, following in the footsteps of Tom Cleverly, Gerard Deulofeu, Mason Holgate and fellow young forward David Henen.

While many Everton supporters many not have heard of Rodriguez, they can have faith in Martinez, who has proven in the past to be very astute in the foreign market.

The reported fee paid for the striker means there is little risk involved, and should he turn out to be an overriding success, his potential value will increase tenfold.

Upon announcing the deal, a number of Everton supporters took to social media site Twitter in order to have their say on the club’s latest South American acquisition.
