The Newcastle United striker was sent off in the 16th minute of the Premier League encounter at St. James’ Park for rash challenge on Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin.
It was a controversial decision which divided opinions among those who were following the game.
Former Celtic and Derby midfielder Burley, who now works as a pundit for ESPN, was among those who thought that Mitrovic deserved to be sent off, calling the 20-year-old Serbia international a “clown” on Twitter.
Clown. Deserved to go.— Craig Burley (@CBurleyESPN) August 29, 2015
Don't see where the defence of Mitrovic is. No attempt to play the ball went over the top and initial contact half way up the shin.— Craig Burley (@CBurleyESPN) August 29, 2015
The more I see the Mitrovic challenge the clearer a red card it is.— Craig Burley (@CBurleyESPN) August 29, 2015
Mitrovic is a silly boy. Only 20. 6 career reds now. Nailed on today. It was a nasty challenge. He got away with one like it at Swansea.— Richard Keys (@richardajkeys) August 29, 2015
An own goal from Argentine defender Fabricio Coloccini seven minutes into the second half proved to be the difference between the two teams at St. James’ Park, as hosts Newcastle suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.
