The Inter Milan captain and Italian international is on Southampton's watchlist.
Much has been made this summer for Southampton’s need for a new central-defender.
With Toby Alderweireld opting for Tottenham Hotspur the club were left with just Jose Fonte, Maya Yoshida and Florin Gardos in the position. When Gardos picked up a serious knee injury, the need became more pressing.
They have been strongly linked with a move for Virgil van Dijk in recent days, ever since the Celtic man saw his team crash out of the Champions League. Meanwhile they have also brought in steven Caulker on loan from QPR.
However, Alfredo Pedulla in Italy believes that they are also enquiring about Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia.
The 27-year-old centre-back has been at Inter since joining from Genoa in 2011 and is their current club captain. He has 20 caps for the Italian national team but his place in the starting XI under the management of Roberto Mancini is not guaranteed.
Southampton are therefore believed to be one of many teams keeping an eye on the player.
Ranocchia is likely to want to join a team playing in Europe this season, given his current circumstances.
Southampton were of course knocked out of the Europa League by Danish champions FC Midtjylland last night, leaving Southampton without that particular bargaining chip for any potential deal.
