Report: Bournemouth lead the race for Jonathan De Guzman ahead of Premier League rivals

Bournemouth are reportedly leading the race for Jonathan De Guzman, despite interest from Sunderland.

According to the Daily Mail, newly-promoted Bournemouth have moved ahead of Premier League rivals Sunderland in the chase for Napoli's Dutch international Jonathan de Guzman.

Reports suggest Cherries boss Eddie Howe has taken advantage of the Black Cats’ failure to reach agreement with the 27-year-old - revealed by HITC Sport - despite having held serious talks with the players' agent.

The Dutchman impressed during his time in the Premier League with Swansea City, scoring 15 goals in 93 appearances during his two seasons spent at the Liberty Stadium between 2012 and 2014.

He made 23 appearances in Serie A last term, scoring three goals and fashioning a further 23 key passes – including one assist. Meanwhile, he completed 81% of his passes and 48% of his attempted tackles

A player of De Guzman’s quality and experience – both of which have been tried and tested in the Premier League – could prove the difference in Bournemouth's quest to remain in the top-flight this season.

The Mail suggests the Napoli midfielder has a buy-out clause of £4.4million and it is believed his Italian club would prefer to sell than allow him out on loan, which could suit the Cherries’ long-term ambitions.
