But the 29-year-old didn't look burdened by the speculation during training on Friday afternoon. Instead, he looked happy and, for the most part, focused and determined.
Whether there is a future for the Frenchman at St James' Park remains to be seen, considering the attacking talent brought to Newcastle this summer in the likes of Florian Thauvin, Georginio Wijnaldum and more.
But Magpies boss Steve McClaren has told reporters the club do not have to sell any more players between now and the end of the transfer window. That suggests a Gouffran exit will simply be a matter of choice rather than necessity if it happened.
