Former Gunner Ray Parlour praised the way Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have started the season at Tottenham Hotspur.
Former Arsenal man Ray Parlour explained on talkSPORT that he feels Tottenham Hotspur have found their key centre back pairing.
Parlour praised defensive duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen for the way they have played so far, as the club look to kick-start their season with a run of victories.
Spurs have conceded four goals so far this campaign, which is three fewer than Chelsea but it’s still far too early to be able to make any cast iron judgements over any area of the team.
“It’s another big season for Pochettino now that he’s trying to bring his own players in. Alderweireld and Vertonghen look very solid at the back and there’s no doubt that you need a good base at the back,” he told talkSPORT.
Pochettino must adhere to continuity
It’s very important that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is consistent in terms of his team selection.
It’s especially significant that the same two players feature in the middle of the back four together as much as possible, because of the importance for them to improve their relationship and understanding.
Spurs made some good defensive signings earlier this summer, but Alderweireld and Vertonghen always seemed like the key centre back partnership, because of their Belgian connection.
Their immediate aim will be to keep a high volume of clean sheets, which will give the side plenty of confidence and put a spring in their step as they blossom together.
