The Crystal Palace star believes Tottenham man Demebe has been his toughest ever opponent.
When asked who his toughest opponent has been, McArthur said: “You’re not gonna believe me, I get asked this quite a lot and I say the same person. A lot of people are surprised, but I’d say Mousa Dembele when he was at Fulham. As a midfielder, you can cope with people who pass the ball, but he was a player that when you’d get close he would just run by you. He was so powerful.”
The abilities that McArthur highlights as being known of Dembele are the traits he showed off at Fulham.
He was an attacking midfielder with power and strength on top of an impressive technical ability, but since moving to North London he has somewhat faded.
Dembele has failed to show these same strengths at White Hart Lane, generally having a limited impact on games, and although many believed he would be leaving Spurs this summer, Mauricio Pochettino looks to have given him another chance.
He has started all three of the Lilywhites’ games so far this season, playing in a wide role, and the lack of depth in the squad could present him with a chance to play in his natural number 10 position in the coming weeks.
Dembele's career with Spurs seems to be one of unfulfilled potential, but there is no denying his talent when playing at top form, and if he can get back to that level then Pochettino has a truly top level player to call upon.
