Former Everton defender Richard Gough told talkSPORT why he feels the club had to deny John Stones’ transfer request.
ESPN is among several sources to have covered the news that Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed the request will be rejected, with his expectation that Stones will play a key part in the club’s season.
“I think they had to do it because if they don’t then I think it makes them look a bit weak,” he told talkSPORT.
Is a deal still possible?
As long as the transfer window is active and as long as Chelsea are prepared to make formal offers, a deal is still possible.
However, Everton don’t seem ready to make the deal easy for Chelsea to force through and nor should they be.
The problem for Martinez comes if Stones is put in a position where he needs to do something such as refusing to play to try and get a move over the line.
However, the fact he played against Barnsley in the League Cup suggests that he’s professional enough to stay focused on doing what he’s paid to do, which is perform and help Everton be a difficult side to get the better of.
