Forget Barton, is Nolan the best addition Leeds or Forest could make this summer?

Should Leeds or Nottingham Forest look at Kevin Nolan after his release from West Ham?

Veteran midfielder Kevin Nolan has been released by West Ham and is now a free agent.

A clamour for his services could go on past transfer deadline day, but he is likely to want to fix himself up with a new club as soon as possible.

Last season he struggled for goals in the Premier League for really the first time in his career - and a drop down to the Championship might just be the best solution for him.

Promotion favourites like Middlesbrough and Derby would be easy options for Nolan to slot straight in at and hope for an instant return to the Premier League, but to join a club like Leeds United or Nottingham Forest would see Nolan able to make a more measurable impact.

Both sides were linked with Nolan's former Newcastle teammate Joey Barton - who signed with Burnley last night, with The Mirror reporting Forest's interest, and The Sun claiming Leeds wanted him earlier in the summer.

Nolan could be an even more superior signing for either club, and at 33 he has plenty left to give.

When the midfielder played one season in the Championship with Newcastle in 2009/10, he was almost unstoppable, scoring 17 goals from midfield.

Both Leeds and Forest have young squads, with talented midfielders like Lewis Cook and Ben Osborn, who could each benefit from having an experienced star like Nolan to guide the side through games and add stability.

A deal of course would come down to wages, especially for Forest who are limited to what they can offer due to an embargo, but if the club can sell themselves to the midfielder effectively and get him to buy in, they may just have a chance.

Nolan is a difference maker who could be the difference between a team finishing in the play-offs and ending up outside the top 10, and both Leeds and Forest would be smart to check out the possibility of bringing in the former Bolton and Newcastle man.
