Free agent Yoann Gourcuff was linked with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal but now looks set for a very different move
There was a time when Yoann Gourcuff had the world at his feet as the star of Bordeaux's double winning team of 2009, but anyone hoping to see the man once viewed as the new Zinedine Zidane in the Premier League looks set to be left disappointed.
Given the title of “Le Successor” to Zizou by L'Equipe following his show-stopping spell with the Girondins, an injury-hit stint with Lyon saw the playmaker's star fade.
But that didn't stop Talksport from speculating about a possible move across the Channel earlier this summer, following his release by Les Gones.
Citing the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City as potential interested parties, the speculation suddenly had fans dreaming of seeing the midfielder turn out in the English top-flight.
But as with so many rumours this summer, this looks set to be another to be filed under misleading, after it was revealed that Gourcuff would be remaining in France.
It is thought that Gourcuff will sign a one year deal with the club, who are evidently cautious about recruiting the midfielder on a long-term deal given his injury problems.
Now 29, it looks increasingly likely that the attacker will never ply his trade in the Premier League and, despite his issues at Lyon, teams like Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and the division as a whole are poorer for his absence.
