Report: Manchester City youngster Rony Lopes set for permanent switch to Monaco

Marcos “Rony” Lopes looks set to depart the Etihad, having spent last season on loan in France with Lille.

Manchester City attacking midfielder Rony Lopes looks set for a permanent switch away from the club, with an £8.8 million move to AS Monaco in the offing.

Manchester Evening News are reporting that the 19-year-old is closing in on a move to the principality club, having failed to force his way into Manuel Pellegrini’s first team plans.

A former Benfica academy star, the attacking midfielder spent last season on loan in France with Lille and was largely impressive.

In 23 Ligue 1 appearances for LOSC, the midfielder scored three goals and shone in a team that also featured Liverpool striker Divock Origi.

But that form was evidently not enough to catch the eye of Pellegrini, with Monaco now set to swoop in with a substantial offer for the young star.

Lopes has been capped by Portugal at six different levels of youth football and was part of the Under-20 team that advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2015 Under-20 World Cup.

Regarded as one for the future of the Sky Blues, his exit would represent a blow to the club’s long-term plans, if confirmed.
