The midfielder became a makeshift right-back last night against the League One side.
Everton took on Barnsley last night in what proved to be a thriller at Oakwell. The Toffees eventually won the game 5-3 after extra time. Goals from Romelu Lukaku did the trick in the end after being 2-0 and 3-2 down at separate points in the game.
Some of the Everton players will want to forget this game rather quickly. Others would be happy with their performance.
Debutant Matthew Pennington should be in the latter category. The young right-back played well for 45 minutes but was brought off at half-time for tactical reasons.
Which saw midfielder Tom Cleverely slot in at right-back.
Everton snapped up the Manchester United player on a free transfer this summer, after he had impressed at Aston Villa on loan last season.
When he agreed to head to Goodison Park it is doubtful the idea of playing at the back was ever mentioned.
He slotted in and actually put in a commendable performance at full-back. Some Everton fans were not so impressed but he did a job that was asked of him and Roberto Martinez’s gamble paid off – as Ross Barkley, who came on for Pennington, proved a massive difference in the second half.
Here is how some Everton fans reacted to Cleverley playing at right-back …
Thought Cleverley had another good game tonight. Nothing special but nice and steady at RB. I know it was only Barnsley, but still....— James Fleming (@JamesFleming9) August 26, 2015
Cleverley was an unsung hero tonight. Slotted in at RB and was brilliant— Michael Reichardt (@reichardt5) August 26, 2015

I’ve hardly noticed Cleverley since went to RB so I think that means he hasn’t done anything stupid like the rest of the defence— Mark Wilson (@efcmark777) August 26, 2015
Cleverley has been pretty decent at RB. Great distribution.— Duke Silver (@Carl0sAlbert0) August 26, 2015
