Celtic fans were particularly interested to see Southampton had been knocked out of Europe on Thursday night.
Indeed, the South Coast club have been linked with Bhoys defender Virgil van Dijk all summer. The latest reports suggest Ronald Koeman's side will look to secure the Dutchman's signature within a couple of days, according to the Daily Mail among others.
Southampton's Europa League exit, then, has got Celtic supporters intrigued. The appeal of a move south has always been the Premier League - but the 24-year-old will now be sacrificing European football if he chooses to leave the Hoops.
Could that provide new hope for the Scottish champions? Some Celtic fans have raised the possibility on Twitter...
Van Dijk had a get out of jail free key when the Bhoys were knocked out of the Champions League. He could have used that as sufficient reasoning to join Southampton, with both sides playing in the Europa League. Now that the Saints have been knocked out, though, the 24-year-old will receive Premier League football but will not be in Europe at all. Could that keep him at Parkhead?

van Dijk would leave for Southampton as we are out of the CL, but sign for a club who are already out of the EL pic.twitter.com/rQif3yaHNC— Stand Up For Celtic (@StandForCeltic) August 27, 2015
