Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to Dan Crowley's Barnsley performance

Dan Crowley playing for England

Aston Villa fans got a first look at a player who left them early in his career for Arsenal, and a look at what might have been.

It is two years on since Aston Villa lost one of brightest to emerge through their academy in recent years, as Arsenal lured Dan Crowley away before he could sign a professional contract at the club.

The midfielder was just 15-years-old at the time, as and reported by The Mirror, Villa even lodged a complaint with the Premier League over the low level compensation they received.

Crowley, 17, has gone onto make strides with Arsenal, featuring for the club's first team on their pre-season tour and become a regular for their under-21 side.

This season he has taken the next step, going out on loan for the first time, signing with League One side Barnsley until January.

Last night the Tykes were in action, taking on Everton in a televised Capital One Cup tie. It was the first real chance for Aston Villa fans to see the midfielder in action since he left the club and see how he is progressing - and he demonstrated that he is making strong progress, scoring against the Toffees.

It evoked emotions of what could have been for Villa fans, still frustrated at the fact he was able to slip through their grasp - but there were also suggestions that the midfielder made a big mistake.

Looking the progress made by Crowley's former youth team pal Jack Grealish, it was pointed out that instead of playing on loan for a League One side, the midfielder could already have been playing Premier League football had he stayed at Aston Villa.

Breaking into the Arsenal first team will be tough no matter how talented he is, with even Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey struggling to nail down regular starting spots in their preferred roles.
