The Arsenal youngster made his first start for West Brom on Tuesday evening.
Gnabry made his first start for the Baggies since joining the club on loan from Arsenal, and he lasted 57 minutes of the tie.
The young winger looked like the attaching threat that he has shown he could be, but there are clear areas that he needs to improve. He looked off the pace occasionally, and flashes of talent were not enough to aid the Baggies in their task to find the back of the net.
The game ended 0-0 after extra time, and it took a penalty shoot out to ensure the Midlands club progressed to the third round to take on fellow Premier League side Norwich City.
Gnabry was signed to inject some pace and skill into the wide positions of Tony Pulis’ side, and on paper he appeared to be a logical signing. A winger regarded for his abilities on the ball, when he gets up to speed, it should be that Gnabry starts to truly excel.
His first start was a performance of potential rather than fulfilled talent, but West Brom fans took to Twitter to claim that the 20-year-old German was the only real bright spark of the League Cup game.
Awful first half. Only bright spark is Gnabry has the ability to just pick the ball up and take a few on.— ZacWBA (@ZacG_) August 25, 2015
@kelly_82 gnabry is the only positive so far and McClean in glimpses, no pace and Sunday morning passing— Ian Pardoe (@IanPardoe1) August 25, 2015
