Florian Thauvin starred as Newcastle United dispatched Northampton Town 4-1, while two signings from Nottingham Forest also made their full debuts.

Newcastle United star Florian Thauvin inspired his side to a 4-1 victory in the Capital One Cup against Northampton Town.

Thauvin almost scored a winner against Manchester United in the final minute of his debut at the weekend, and wasted little time getting on the scoresheet for the first time on his first game at St James' Park.

He netted after just three minutes, and would go onto get an assist by setting up much maligned defender Mike Williamson to head home on his first appearance of the campaign.

Siem de Jong and Daryl Janmaat also netted, with Northampton scoring an early penalty to reduce the deficit to 2-1 for half-time.

The match was notable for several players, including Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles, who finally made their debuts.

The duo were signed a year ago and then sent back on loan to Nottingham Forest for the season. Like Thauvin above, both players took to Twitter to express their delight at making their bows.

Impressive teenager Rolando Aarons and new signing Georginio Wijnaldum also commented, with the latter singling out Thauvin's display for praise.

The real feel good factor of the night came with Ivan Toney making his debut as a late substitute, against the side he signed from for £500,000 just a month earlier.

He played the final 12 minutes of the game, and wrote on social media afterwards that he was over the moon to be brought on by manager Steve McClaren.
