Serie B side Novara Calcio are said to be challenging Sheffield Wednesday and Deportivo la Coruna for Gil Vicente midfielder Vitor Goncalves.

According to Portuguese publication Record, Italian Serie B side Novara Calcio could battle Sheffield Wednesday to land Vitor Goncalves.

The report states that the 23-year-old, who is also wanted by Deportivo la Coruna, has been heavily watched over the past season and the Italian club aren't put off by the size of the clubs in for the midfielder already.

Wednesday, who were initially linked with the midfielder at the beginning of July by the Star, may want to reevaluate their stance regarding the talented midfielder should he become available but haven't gone all out to bring him to England up to this point.

The Sheffield club are in dire need of some quality additions should they look to make the top six this summer and could see the former Portuguese under-21 international as a part of that as deadline day looms for all England clubs.

Do Wednesday need to strengthen in midfield?

Carlos Carvalhal should be looking to strengthen in all positions, but the midfield is one area where an extra bit of quality could really help Wednesday transform into a substantial promotion contender.

An attacker will be first on the list, no doubt, but thereafter a midfielder will be needed to ensure the striker gets the service he needs to have an impact in the Championship.

Carvalhal will be hoping to see his team's performances improve over the coming weeks as he looks to win promotion in his first season in England to put his recent disappointments as head coach behind him.

With a few key additions between now and September, a top six finish won't be an impossibility for the Owls but reinforcements will have to be made to give themselves a chance this season.
