The Italians are reportedly in advanced talks to sign the forward, with Tim Sherwood keen to sell.
The player is currently surplus to requirements at Villa Park, with a number of fresh faces arriving over the summer transfer window to push him even further down the pecking order.
He is also unwanted by current boss Tim Sherwood, who is keen to now trim a bulging squad after a busy period of players arriving at the club, and Tonev is chief among those he is keen to see leave before the deadline passes.
That has led to negotiations with Serie A new boys Frosinone, who are in advanced talks with Villa to secure the player, with his signing representing a major coup for their attack should they finalise it, according to TMW.
Should Tonev leave Villa Park, it will bring an end to a disappointing spell with the club since his move from Lech Poznan, with him having failed to impress either Paul Lambert or Tim Sherwood.
There was also a disappointing period on loan with Celtic last season, who decided not to take up an option to buy him after he failed to make an impression, while his seven-match ban for abusing Aberdeen full-back Shay Logan also likely played its part.
With those facts in mind, it is unlikely his departure from Villa will be met with much disappointment or disapproval by the Villa Park faithful.
