According to the Daily Mail, Everton are making a move for Tottenham defender Federico Fazio as they begin to prepare for life without defender John Stones.
BBC Sport reported on Tuesday that centre back Stones has submitted a transfer request at Goodison Park in a bid to force through a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea.
After a summer-long fight to keep Stones on Merseyside, Everton now need to consider potential replacements for the England international - and it appears that Fazio is a top target.
The 28-year-old joined Spurs from Sevilla last summer, and whilst he arrived with a strong reputation from his time in Spanish football, Fazio struggled to nail down a regular first team place under his fellow Argentine Mauricio Pochettino last term.
The giant defender has also been left out so far this season, suggesting that an exit could be close - and the Daily Mail report that, after a move to West Bromwich Albion collapsed, Fazio is now the subject of a surprise £5m bid from Everton.
Tottenham are unlikely to put up much resistance over Fazio's departure, with the player seemingly not in Pochettino's plans despite only arriving a year ago.
Fazio doesn't possess the ball-playing qualities of Stones, but he would bring height and power to an Everton back line which lost Antolin Alcaraz and Sylvain Distin earlier this summer.
