The towering Tunisian has been linked with the likes of Newcastle United and Aston Villa in recent weeks.

Several Premier League clubs look set to miss out on Monaco powerhouse Aymen Abdennour, with the centre-back in advanced discussions with Valencia, according to Get French Football.

The Birmingham Mail reported on Aston Villa and Newcastle’s alleged interest in the 26-year old, while Liverpool are also believed to have targeted the Tunisian, as reported by talkSPORT.

Valencia now appear to be favourites, however, with GFF claiming that talks are well advanced but work is still to be done over the fee, with Monaco demanding around £22 million.

The news will come as a blow to his Premier League suitors but Villa and Newcastle’s interest, in particular, always seemed ambitious and the likelihood of either club shelling out upwards of £20 million for a defender was always slim.

Joleon Lescott appears to be Villa’s alternative option at centre-back, according to the Daily Mail, while Newcastle desperately need defensive reinforcements beyond the capture of the promising Chancel Mbemba.

Both clubs have had fairly successful transfer windows so far, but will be hoping to add the finishing touches to a solid summer in the remaining few days.
