The Paris Saint-Germain star has been linked to a number of Premier League clubs, but may now have other plans.
The idea of Zlatan Ibrahimovic pitching up in the Premier League in what are surely the twilight years of his career is an idea that appeals to a lot of fans.
But if there was any doubt as to where Ibrahimovic’s future lies once he does decide to get off the PSG money train, the big Swede may have clarified things in one simple tweet.
Coming just hours after Malmo beat Celtic 2-0 in their Champions League qualifying play-off second leg, the message from Zlatan was short and sweet:
MFF in Champions League. One day I hope to experience the Champions League in Malmö on the pitch. Congratulations! pic.twitter.com/ZJ5CAMPBNH— Zlatan Ibrahimović (@Ibra_official) August 26, 2015
Yet since it’s posting, the internet has been rife with speculation on the topic.
There are two distinct schools of thought when it comes to assessing the meaning of his words.
On the one hand, he could simply be congratulating Malmo on a job well done while expressing the hope that they are drawn against PSG in the group phase.
But in saying that he “one day” wants to experience the Champions League on their pitch, Ibrahimovic may be hinting at something else.
In this school of thought, the tweet can be interpreted as the clearest indication of where his future lies, namely with the club where it all began, Malmo.
A product of the club’s youth academy, Zlatan played 40 games for the senior side before heading to Ajax and has never ruled out a return.
In doing so, he would also be following the example of Henrik Larsson, who headed back to first club Högaborgs BK to see out his career.
It all points to the idea that Ibrahimovic may already have his future mapped out, and it’s one that may not include a stop over in England.
