Confirmed: Asier Illarramendi joins Real Sociedad from Real Madrid

The 24-year old had reportedly interested Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur but has now returned to the Anoeta Stadium.

Liverpool and Spurs have missed out on former Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi after he completed his switch to Real Sociedad, as confirmed on the club’s official site.

The Daily Star reported on the Reds interest a few days ago, while Spurs were linked with a late swoop for the combative midfielder by the Guardian just yesterday.

He now returns to his former club Real Sociedad, however, after making 59 appearances in his two years at the Bernabeu, to link up with ex-Manchester United boss David Moyes.

Tottenham’s quest for a holding midfielder looks set to rumble into the final few days of the window, with the latest linked being Jeremy Clement of Saint Etienne.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were thought to be eyeing up a replacement for Lucas, but handed the Brazilian a start against Arsenal on Monday and could yet persevere with the 28-year old.

Tottenham's need is arguably the more pressing, with Eric Dier - converted from his natural centre-back role - currently the club's only defensive-minded option in midfield.
