Best possible Champions League draw for Manchester United; and nightmare option

UEFA Champions League Trophy

A look at the best and worst Champions League draws Manchester United could land.

Will it be first time lucky for Louis van Gaal in the Champions League with Manchester United?

The Red Devils are into the group stages after a 7-1 aggregate victory over Club Brugge, which saw Wayne Rooney bag a second leg hat-trick.

The Champions League qualifying phases are complete, and UEFA have confirmed the seedings for Thursday's draw, which takes place at 5.45pm.

As stated via UEFA's official website, United are in the second group of seeds.

With that in mind we have taken a look at the best and worst case scenario for the club...

Best possible draw

PSV, Manchester United, Olympiakos, Gent

Eredivisie champions PSV are the best draw of the top seeds United could land, with Benfica a close second. Drawing the Dutch side would be particularly notable for Memphis Depay, who left the club in the summer to sign at Old Trafford.

Greek side Olympiakos would present a comfortable pot three draw, and a chance to avenge the away defeat suffered under David Moyes, and after the victory over Club Brugge, a return to Belgium to play Gent would seem inviting rather than daunting.

Worst possible draw

PSG, Manchester United, Sevilla, Wolfsburg

Facing Bayern Munich may just come a bit too soon for Bastian Schweinsteiger, who ended his long association with the club in the summer. The German side boast a midfield of Thiago Alcantara and Arturo Vidal, a fearsome combination of former United targets - while it's likely Thomas Muller will remain with the Bundesliga side.

Barcelona or Real Madrid would be just as tough, yet there is one draw worse than all three - and that's facing record signing Angel di Maria's PSG in a reunion nobody wants.

Back to back Europa League winner Sevilla are as tough as they come in pot three, although Roma would be a tough draw too, while German side Wolfsburg outclass the rest of the pot four picks, and will be a nasty surprise United would rather not face considering the easier options available.

Here are the full seedings

Pot 1: Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern München, Juventus, Benfica, Paris, Zenit, PSV Eindhoven

Pot 2: Real Madrid, Atlético, Porto, Arsenal, Man. United, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, Man. City

Pot 3: Shakhtar Donetsk, Sevilla, Lyon, Dynamo Kyiv, Olympiacos, CSKA Moscow, Galatasaray, Roma

Pot 4: BATE Borisov, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg, Dinamo Zagreb, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Gent, Malmö, Astana.
