Southampton are the latest team to move for Illarramendi, also wanted by Tottenham and Liverpool.
As reported by the Mirror, Southampton have made a late move to sign 25-year-old Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi, who looks set to leave the Bernabeu before the close of the transfer window.
It is stated that he was close to rejoining Real Sociedad in a permanent transfer, but the Saints have made late swoop to sign the midfielder as they still look for cover following the exit of Morgan Schneiderlin.
Oriol Romeu has already been signed by Ronald Koeman, but Victor Wanyama could be on his way to Spurs - as reported by the Mirror - leaving the Saints lacking cover in the central positions.
And Illarramendi has been targeted by the South Coast club, due to his relatively young age and cheap market value, with Madrid willing to sell him for roughly £11 million, according to the report.
However, the face competition for his signature, with Sociedad still attempting to complete a deal. Also, Premier League rivals Liverpool and Spurs have been linked with making a move for the former Spanish youth international, as reported by the Liverpool Echo and the Standard respectively. Both Liverpool and Spurs have held a long-term interest in him, but as of yet, have not managed to complete a deal for Illarramendi.
There is no indication as to which club Illarramendi would prefer to move to, although a transfer away from Madrid is all-but guaranteed before the close of the window at the end of this month.
