Nicklas Bendtner an unlikely hero in Wolfsburg draw

The former Arsenal joke figure netted a late equaliser for the Bundesliga side against Cologne at the weekend.

Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner was the unlikely hero for Wolfsburg at the weekend, as the burly centre forward scored to salvage a point for his team in a 1-1 draw with Cologne.

The Danish centre forward has a respectable goal return for his country but has struggled to find a club where he can play and find the net regularly over the years.

At Arsenal the Scandinavian attacker was seen as something of a joke figure, with Bendtner failing to live up to his billing despite having a considerably high opinion of himself.

The Dane was introduced as a substitute for Ivan Perisic in Wolfsburg’s latest fixture, with the back-up forward slotting home an equaliser from close range in the 83rd minute to help last year’s Bundesliga runners-up avoid their first defeat of the new campaign.

Wolfsburg have opted for Dutch striker Bas Dost as their first-choice number nine for the last six months, with Bendtner only getting five Bundesliga starts last season, scoring just one goal in the process.

However, the 27-year-old will hope for more prolonged time on the pitch for the Volkswagen Arena outfit in 2015-16, with the former Arsenal man starting the new campaign in positive fashion.
