Mike Williamson netted for Newcastle in their win over Northampton.
Mike Williamson was named as a starter for Newcastle against Northampton Town, and repaid his manager by getting on the scoresheet.
He netted in a 4-1 win over the League Two side, assisted by new signing Florian Thauvin by heading home a cross.
The defender was making his first appearance of the season, having not even made a substitute appearance so far under Steve McClaren.
The goal will have helped him make an impression - but Newcastle and their fans may also hope that it will act as a prompt for clubs to show an interest and make a bid to sign him before the transfer window closes next Tuesday.
The 31-year-old has only one year left on his contract at the club, and was exposed last season as one of the weakest links in the side. At this point even his goal was not enough to suggest he has a future as a first choice defender at the club.
Fans reacted to his goal in good spirits, with new boy Florian Thauvin receiving praise for making it happen.
