Assessing West Ham's reported three-man winger short-list

Upton Park

Taking a closer look at the three players linked with West Ham United this week.

According to a report from the London Evening Telegraph, West Ham United are considering three potential targets as they look to add more width to their squad in what remains of the summer transfer window.

The report claims Chelsea player Victor Moses is currently Hammers boss Slaven Bilic’s preferred option, with West Ham prepared to pay £6million but the Blues holding out for around £10million.

But there are alternatives, with Tottenham Hotspur’s Aaron Lennon and Adnan Januzaj of Manchester United also on the short-list.

Here we take a look at which player would be the best option for West Ham this season:

Victor Moses

The Chelsea player is predominantly a left winger although he can also play on the opposite flank or as an attacking midfielder if required.

That versatility marks him out as a viable option, as does the fact that he will surely be desperate to find a club that he can call a home after so long spent out on loan.

Moses does not appear to be part of Chelsea’s plans – especially now Pedro has arrived from Barcelona – and at just 24 he still has his best years ahead of him.

Of the three players linked, he would be the best option for West Ham if they want pace, creativity and goals, but only if they can push the price down.

Aaron Lennon

Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon also looks set for the exit after failing to make any of Mauricio Pochettino’s match-day squads so far this season.

At 28, he is four years older than Moses and his skill-set is far more limited; basically West Ham would be signing an out-and-out right winger although he does possess electric pace.

He is also a tireless worker who never shirks on his defensive duties and if he plays to his potential he could soon become a fan favourite at Upton Park, but given his age he is likely to be only a back-up option to Moses.

Adnan Januzaj

A potential loan move for Januzaj would be exciting for West Ham fans but if Bilic is seeking additional pace he may want to look elsewhere.

Januzaj is very skilful but not the fastest and he is far more suited to a play-maker role where he can play through the middle. As a result he often cuts in and his presence could cause issues with Dimitri Payet likely to occupy similar positions.
