Could Tottenham Hotspur move for the experienced defensive midfielder?
According to a report from the London Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur target Asier Illarramendi could leave Real Madrid in the next week after being told he is surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu.
The report claims Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in signing the 25-year-old, and given Spurs’ need for an experienced defensive midfielder he could be the perfect solution.
Illarramendi has played 90 matches for Madrid having previously turned out 56 times for Real Sociedad and he is at an age when he will want to be playing week in, week out at a top club.
Tottenham could definitely offer him that opportunity and if he is not in Real manager Rafa Benitez’s plans that could be the break Spurs need to pull off something of a late transfer coup.
The North London club impressed in the early stages of the transfer window, significantly strengthening their defence by signing Kieran Trippier, Kevin Wimmer and Toby Alderweireld, but despite the recent addition of Clinton N’Jie chairman Daniel Levy still has some work to do in the remaining days of the window to ensure his side is strong enough this season.
Illarramendi would certainly help in that regard but the Standard report suggests that Tottenham’s lack of Champions League football this season could be a significant factor. Only time will tell…
