Saidy Janko discusses replacing Mikael Lustig in Celtic’s first-team

Saidy Janko impressed for Celtic at the weekend, and he could replace Lustig this week.

Lustig was taken off injured during Celtic’s 3-2 victory over Malmo last week, and Janko has told the Evening Times that he is ready to make the step up and replace Lustig in the Bhoys’ first-team for the Champions League.

The 19-year-old summer signing said: “I am definitely ready. I have to be. If I am playing it would be great. It is a big opportunity for me and I feel ready. It is a big game and if I am asked to play a part then I am confident that I can do that. I am ready and I think now it is up to the manager whether he thinks I need to play.”

Swiss youth international Janko moved to Parkhead over the summer, leaving Manchester United, but he has so far found chances hard to come by under Ronny Deila.

The right-back played the entire 90 minutes against Dundee United at the weekend, but it was only his second start out of a possible 10 games, and he has only one further substitute appearance to his name.

The youngster has yet to appear in the Champions League, and it is Efe Ambrose who is expected to fill in for Lustig should his injury keep him out of this week’s second leg tie with Malmo.

However, he impressed in the 3-1 victory over Dundee United, and showed that he has the talent to play for Celtic’s first-team on a regular basis - even in European competition.

He believes that he is ready to make the step up to Europe, but if Deila decides to include Janko is his starting line-up this week, he is making a bold move with Celtic’s Champions League hopes on the line.
