Gauld said: “There is nothing to say there and there is nothing to the story. We are aware of lots of things and we will always try to make the squad stronger. Hopefully when the transfer window closes we will be strong for the season ahead.”
It appears as if Deila has completely ruled out making a move for the Scottish Under-21 international, even if the head coach has admitted that he could be making more moves in the transfer window before it closes at the end of this month.
The Scotsman claimed over the weekend that Gauld could be heading to Parkhead this season, after Sporting made the decision to send him out on loan. The 19-year-old attacker made the switch to Portugal last summer, but has only made five appearances for the club, and they want to ensure he can continue to develop with consistent competitive football to his name.
The same report claims he is unwilling to move back to the interested Dundee United - the club where he started his career - due to the struggles they are facing, and the Bhoys were stated as showing an interest in him.
However, Deila’s comments rule out a move for the young winger, and it is unlikely Celtic would be able to offer Gauld the playing time assurances that Sporting want him to have anyway.
He needs to be playing consistently if he is to develop into the player he has shown he can be, and it is good for the youngster’s career that Celtic do not want to take him on loan for the season.
