Pedro revenge? Manchester United enter race to sign ex-Chelsea ace for £55m

Manchester United are to battle Manchester City to sign former Chelsea winger Kevin de Bruyne.

Manchester United have entered the race to sign Kevin de Bruyne from Wolfsburg, report German channel Sport1.

The Belgian international has given mixed signals over his future at the Bundesliga club recently amid interest from Manchester City.

The Manchester Evening News had yesterday proclaimed City as the only club in the race after Bayern Munich distanced themselves from interest in the attacker.

Sport1 exclusively claim Manchester United have signalled their interest in the attacking midfielder, and would be willing to pay the £55 million required.

Revenge over Chelsea?

United last week lost out to Chelsea to sign Barcelona attacker Pedro, who scored on his debut for the Blues at the weekend, while the Red Devils had to make do with a goalless draw at home to Newcastle.

De Bruyne is a player Chelsea signed in 2012 from Genk, only to sell him two years later, with the midfielder too impatient to wait for a chance under Jose Mourinho.

United would be paying big money for the attacker, but seeing him tear up the league for the Red Devils would not go down well in west London, nor indeed with their 'noisy neighbours' Manchester City.

A good or odd fit?

United need a striker as a priority, and arguably a centre-back as their second biggest need, and De Bruyne is neither.

What he would do is help the supply line to Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez, and put pressure on Memphis Depay and Juan Mata to produce to stay in the side.

De Bruyne scored 10 goals in 34 league games for Wolfsburg last season and is just 24-years-old.
