A round-up of the latest news from St James's Park, as the Magpies prepare for a League Cup match with Northampton Town.
The former Arsenal forward has already scored three times this season, following on from a superb breakthrough campaign last time round.
With the Magpies struggling to add firepower this summer aside from Anderlecht attacker Aleksandar Mitrovic, the Mirror says the club have identified Afobe to add some depth up top, desire Wolves previously insisting he is not for sale.
Newcastle boss Steve McClaren has confirmed he intends to take the League Cup seriously this season as the club continue to push to end their trophy drought that spans decades.
It was made clear when McClaren took over at St James's Park that a trophy is one of his targets during his reign, and even if he does mix up his team against the Cobblers, it will be a strong selection.
"We'll be putting out strongest team possible out," he is quoted as saying in the Northern Echo. "Taking into account what happened on Saturday, taking into account there's a game next Saturday, taking into account that we have got a very good squad.
“Tomorrow night's team is strong enough and good enough to win the game."
Unsurprisngly, new Magpies forward Ivan Toney is eager to be involved, considering it is against the side he left to join Newcastle this month.
“I think everybody knows I would love to play in that game," the youngster told the Chronicle.
“But it is obviously it is the manager’s decision who he chooses. Hopefully I can squeeze my way in, maybe on the bench.
“It would be great playing against the team that made me.
“If I can manage to get a run out and nick a goal maybe that would be good.”
